Modernising power distribution at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, ALTEN drives a key renovation project

ALTEN Finland FInnish Opera

ALTEN Finland is currently contributing to a major modernisation effort within power distribution for the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, on behalf of Senaatti, the Finnish state-owned property organisation. The work forms part of a broader two-year renovation programme, aimed at securing a stable, modern and future-proof electrical infrastructure in a building with highly complex technical requirements.

Upgrading the technical heart of the building
This sub-project focuses on renewing the facility’s central electrical distribution systems. The scope includes the renovation of four main switchgear centers, four 10 kV transformers, the associated main distribution equipment, and an emergency power generator. These components form the core of the building’s operational reliability, essential for ensuring uninterrupted activities and maintaining high-quality experiences for the public.

ALTEN’s contribution, technical depth and structured delivery
ALTEN is responsible for the basic design, and for preparing contract and equipment inquiries. The project demands advanced expertise in electrical network calculations and protection settings to ensure proper dimensioning and a high level of operational safety.
By combining deep technical competence with experience from large-scale renovation projects, ALTEN supports Senaattiin creatinga reliableand future-proof foundation for the electrical systems.

Senaatti on ALTEN’s contribution to the project:

Insights from the project team
To better understand how the work progresses, we spoke with one of the project managers involved. He summarised his role, saying:

“My main responsibility is to coordinate the design process and ensure that all documentation is delivered to the client on schedule. I also advise the customer on power distribution matters and work closely with the design team. Tools like AutoCAD and the electrical calculation software Febdok are essential in my daily workflow, which typically involves design reviews, planning meetings, and submitting technical material through the client’s document management system. Special attention was also given to material recycling, in line with one of the client’s key business priorities.”

Strengthening the future
Through this modernisation effort, the facility will be equipped with a robust and energy-efficient electrical infrastructure capable of meeting future demands. The upgrades will secure operational continuity for a venue that plays a significant role in the national arts landscape, a place where technical excellence supports world-class performances.
